April 10, 2007

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College football team kicked off its spring 2007 practice schedule with a 7:30 p.m. practice on Tuesday evening. It is the first of 15 practices during the spring, culminating with the spring game on May 5.

Mercyhurst loses 14 seniors from a 2006 squad that went 3-8, but returns All-GLIAC performers on offense, defense and special teams. Richard Stokes was named to the All-GLIAC second team as a running back, Brandon Hill as a punter, and Bryan Boyce was named as an honorable mention on defense.

In all the team returns its top six rushers, top two passers, and four of its top five tacklers from a year ago.

Two additions have been made to the coaching staff, as well. Barris Grant is the new defensive coordinator/linebackers coach and John Thompson will coach the defensive backs.

The Lakers get the 2007 season underway on September 1 with a game at Northwood. Mercyhurst's home opener is September 15, when the Lakers host Wayne State at 1:30 PM. Mercyhurst travels crosstown to rival Gannon the following weekend, September 22.
