Position:
Head Coach (Offensive Backs)

2002

Marty Schaetzle began his head coaching tenure at Mercyhurst in 2002 and has a seven-year record of 21-43. He will lead the Lakers into their first season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in 2008 after spending the first seven seasons as the coach in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He signed a two-year contract extension in December that will keep him at Mercyhurst through 2009.

The Mercyhurst football program has stabilized during Schaetzle's time, finishing the 2007 season with a record of 4-7 and 3-7 in GLIAC play. As the offensive coordinator, Schaetzle guided a juggernaut offense that broke a number of school records in 2007. The team scored a school-record 353 points, or 32.1 points per game. The Lakers scored 40 or more points in four consecutive games, including a 49-28 victory over rival Gannon for the coveted Niagara Cup. The Lakers also won one of the most exciting games in the history of the program, a 58-50 triple overtime thriller against Wayne State. Junior running back Richard Stokes broke both the single season and career rushing totals at Mercyhurst under Schaetzle's tutelage and senior quarterback Mitch Phillis broke the career record for touchdown passes and tied the single game and single season records as well.

In 2006, Mercyhurst showed promise for the future. The Lakers went 3-7 overall, but finished with a winning record at home (3-2) and picked up its three GLIAC victories by an average of 21 points per game. Mercyhurst put together a dominant performance for Homecoming, crushing rival Gannon 35-14. The Lakers also lost a pair of games by four points or less.

After a tough first year at the helm (2-9) in 2002, the Lakers showed great improvement in 2003 (5-6) and held their own in 2004 (4-7). One of the four wins in 2004 was a 22-15 upset of nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State in early October at Tullio Field. The seven losses that year included one to a Division I-AA team and three conference losses by a combined 13 points. The Lakers also went 3-7 in 2005, but had two All-GLIAC selections and five honorable mentions.

A total of 47 players have earned All-GLIAC status under the tutelage of Schaetzle. His players have earned GLIAC All-Academic honors on 73 occasions in his seven years and he has also had three athletes named to CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District squads.

Schaetzle is a career offensive coach who came to Mercyhurst from Division I-AA Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., where he worked as an assistant for five seasons. He began his Bucknell tenure by focusing on the tight ends and tackles before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1999.

His first season at the helm of the offense was a huge success. The Bison piled up 320 points, the third highest scoring season in school history, and produced the best ground attack in 19 years. The running game averaged 196.6 yards per contest, the most since the 1980 team averaged 216.9. During his tenure, his linemen earned All-Patriot League honors seven times.

As an offensive lineman, Schaetzle was Bucknell's team captain in 1982 and graduated from there in 1983. He won the George Rieu Award as the Bison's outstanding lineman in 1981 and 1982. He also won the 1983 Edward Pangburn Award, given to a senior athlete for "sportsmanship, fellowship, and contribution to the university." Schaetzle played high school football at St. Francis Prep for Vinny O'Connor. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and also serves on a professional development committee.

Schaetzle is married to Jean Ann and the couple has two sons, Thurman and Griffin, and two daughters, Courdell and Kendal.
