Lakers Lose GLIAC Game To Ashland

Feb. 17, 2007

Box Score

Ashland, Ohio - The Ashland men's basketball team caught fire and nailed 14 three-pointers to beat Mercyhurst 86-56 in GLIAC action Saturday.

Five different players hit three-pointers and the Eagles made 14-of-27 from long range on the afternoon to pull away from the Lakers. As well, Ashland held a 34-21 rebounding advantage, limiting Mercyhurst to just five offensive boards.

Avi Fogel led Mercyhurst with 12 points, while Shelby Chaney finished with nine points and four blocked shots. Greg Emmons led Ashland with 23 points, followed by Brett Bartlett with 21. Steve Gansey added 16 and Vahn Knight had 12.

Ashland made eight three-pointers in the opening half to take a 45-31 lead at the break. Emmons and Bartlett combined for 29 of the team's first half scoring output. Mercyhurst stayed close by sinking 11-of-12 free-throws in the first half, but the shooting disparity was too much to overcome. Ashland shot 59 percent in the first half and 55 percent for the game, while Mercyhurst shot 43 percent in the opening half and 41 percent overall.

With the defeat, Mercyhurst and Ashland are now both 8-8 in the GLIAC, one game behind Wayne State for second place in the South Division. Mercyhurst holds tiebreak advantages over both teams. The Lakers, now 16-10 on the season, will look to rebound in their final game of the regular season when the team plays at rival Gannon Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
