Jason Leone starts his fourth year as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator after guiding the 2005-06 Lakers to a 19-9 record. Leone has recruited a pair of All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players while at Mercyhurst and helped the team to a 43-40 record in three seasons. He also aided in the player development of two other all-league performers and two GLIAC All-Defensive team members in his tenure at Mercyhurst.
Leone graduated in 1999 from the University of Rochester where he achieved numerous all-star honors, including First Team University Athletic Association (UAA) accolades. He served as a Yellowjacket team captain and participated in the 1999 NCAA Tournament.
The Syracuse, New York, native began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Potsdam for the 1999-2000 season. He helped guide the Bears to their most wins at the time (17) in ten years.
Leone then worked three years as the head assistant at Clarkson. While there, the Golden Knights won 37 games, including a single-season record of 19 victories in 2001-02 and their first two postseason victories in school history. Clarkson also made it to the ECAC Finals that year. The 37 wins were the second highest three-year total in school history at the time and the team's 19-10 record in 2001-02 represented the third best turnaround in all of Division III. The Golden Knights finished the 2001-02 season ranked fifth in the East Region.
Leone helped to develop six All-Upstate (New York) Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) and three All-Region players during his three years at Clarkson. He also assisted in recruiting the UCAA Conference Rookie of the Year in two of his three years at Clarkson. Clarkson won its first regular season conference championship in school history in 2003-04 with Leone's three recruiting classes.
Leone finished his master's at Potsdam in 2001 in Instructional Technology. He was the head coach for the Adirondack Open Division Basketball Team for the Empire State Games for three years. His 2003 squad captured the bronze medal and his 2004 team took home the silver. Leone has also worked the prestigious 5-Star Basketball Camp for the last eight summers and has directed his own summer basketball camp in Syracuse.
