Matthew Capell is entering his third year on the coaching staff at Mercyhurst College, following a stint as an assistant coach at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
The 2007-08 season was Capell's first as Gary Manchel's top assistant. In 2006-07, Capell served as the team's graduate assistant. In his two seasons at Mercyhurst, the Lakers have posted 33 wins, 18 GLIAC victories and reached the GLIAC Tournament twice. Before his arrival at Mercyhurst, Capell was an assistant at Division III Hamilton beginning in 2004. Hamilton was one of the nation's strongest basketball and academic schools, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06 after hosting a first round game. The squad went 23-5 overall and won the Liberty League regular season and tournament championship. At Hamilton, Capell's teams went 38-16 (.704). His duties included recruiting, academic coordinating, player development, opponent scouting, non-conference scheduling, and fundraising.
Prior to his time at Hamilton, Capell was an assistant coach at Clarkson University during the 2003-04 season and at Alfred State College during the 2002-03 year. At those schools, he was involved in recruiting, academic coordinating, player development, film coordinating, fundraising, practice planning and game day preparation, and scouting opponents.
Capell has also been involved with Five-Star Basketball Camp, the University of Buffalo Camp, Cornell Camp, Hoop Mountain Basketball Camp, the Eastern Invitational, Ron DeCarli Basketball Camp, Buddy Basketball Clinic, and Nazareth College Basketball Camp.
A graduate of Alfred University, Capell received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 2003. He is currently working toward a master's degree in organizational leadership at Mercyhurst. |
