Alumni and Varsity Tie 6-6
Oct. 1, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The varsity team needed a run in the last of the ninth to salvage a 6-6 tie with the alums in the Fifth Annual Alumni Game played Saturday morning as part of the Homecoming/Parents' Weekend festivities. The teams combined for ten runs in the first three innings. Each squad then plated solo runs in the ninth. After five combined runs in the first, Chris Allen's two-run single in the third stretched the alumni lead to 5-2 before Joff Stoll countered with a three-run blast to left in the bottom of the frame to knot the contest. Thanks to excellent pitching and stingy defenses, neither team would score again until the last inning. The alums took a 6-5 lead when Frankie Rodriguez tripled to right and scored on a ground single to center through a drawn-in infield by Ryan Nietupski. The varsity got the equalizer in the bottom of the ninth on a walk, a sacrifice, and a throwing error. The alums were managed by Joe Cook, who began the baseball program at the college in 1973. The alumni team featured players from as long ago as the mid-70s. The contest was followed by a picnic adjacent Tullio Field. |
