Lakers Swept by No. 6 Grand Valley State

ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst dropped a pair of GLIAC contests to No. 6 Grand Valley State. Brian Chad pitched a gem in game one, but GVSU outlasted Mercyhurst 2-1. The 'Hurst also fell in game two, despite a home run from Jeff Stoll. Game One David Lough was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, but the rest of the offense was silenced by conference ERA leader Nick Beach. Beach outdueled Chad, striking out 10 in a complete game, allowing just an unearned run and five hits. Neither team scored until the top of the fifth inning, when an RBI single by GVSU's Pat Radde brought home Casey Robrahn. Grand Valley made it 2-0 the following inning with a run scoring on a single by Spud McKenzie. The Lakers cut it to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning. Jamie Walczak reached on an error by the GVSU rightfielder, and scored on a single by Lough. Mercyhurst nearly tied the score two batters later on a double by Joe Luli, but Lough was called out on a play at the plate. Game Two Grand Valley stretched it to 4-0 before Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard with a RBI single by Trey Bennett in the bottom of the fifth. Adam Gray, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on the play. Stoll's second homer of the season, over the wall in left centerfield, cut it to 4-2 the next inning, but Grand Valley added a pair in the seventh on a single by Nick Smith to ice the game. Bennett was 2-for-4 to lead Mercyhurst. John Mang went the distance on the hill for Mercyhurst, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits and two walks. Danny Richard pitched a complete game for Grand Valley, surrendering six hits, a walk and two earned runs while striking out eight. Mercyhurst is 20-15 overall and 6-8 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley sits at 31-2 and 19-1. The two teams play again on Sunday at Mercyhurst, starting at noon. |
