West Palm Beach, Fla. - Mercyhurst continued its hot start to the 2008 season Friday at the Papa John's Palm Beach Challenge with wins over C.W. Post and Division I Mount St. Mary's.

The two victories improved the Lakers to 7-3 on the young season and stretched their winning streak to three games.

C.W. Post, coming off a 30-win season, made its 2008 debut against the Lakers and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the fifth of starter Wes Craig. The Lakers, however, answered by scoring on an error and tied the game on a Jamie Walczak RBI single. The two squads traded runs again the next inning and C.W. Post picked up one more in the sixth.

The Lakers, though, retook the lead with a pair of unearned runs. The Pioneers refused to wilt, tying the game in the top of the eight, but the Laker freshman Craig Denman singled in classmate Jonathan Keppler with two outs in the bottom of the inning to give the Lakers a 7-6 advantage.

John Morris (1-0) breezed through the final 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out a pair to earn the mound victory. Greg Turk and Joseph Furner each recorded two hits and an RBI.

Following the win over C.W. Post, the Lakers immediately returned to the field and recieved a sterling pitching effort from junior John Mang to earn a 6-3 win over Mount St. Mary's--their second win over a Division I opponent this season.

Mang (1-1) surrendered three runs, two of which were earned, and struck out eight in 8.2 innings of work. James Ludwig came on to finish the game and notched his first save of the season.

Mercyhurst jumped on the opponent early, scoring three runs in the first on a three-run homer from red-shirt sophomore John Blike. The lead extended to 4-0 in the second on a Scott Monzel RBI single.

Mang allowed just two hits and kept Mount St. Mary's off the board through five innings. Mercyhurst, however, would add to the lead in the top of the eighth on a two-run double from Adam Gray.

Blike finished with two hits and three RBIs, and Monzel went 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.

The Lakers cap their Florida trip Saturday against Bryant.
