Lakers Come Close to Knocking Off the #18th Seed in the Nation
Oct. 31, 2007
Erie, Pa - The men's club hockey team came close to knocking off the #18th seed in the nation this past weekend when they traveled down to Warrendale, Pa to play the Slippery Rock Pride. Mercyhurst jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a botched Slippery Rock pass that ended up finding the back of an empty net due to a delayed penalty call. Slippery Rock answered with a goal of their own a few minutes later tying the game at 1-1. Mercyhurst regained the lead 3 more times, but Slippery Rock was quick to answer each deficit with their own equalizer, eventually leading to a 4-4 regulation tie. Slippery Rock was able to notch the game winning goal a few minutes into overtime off a point shot that found its way through a couple of bodies in front and into the back of the net. This marks the third time this year that Mercyhurst has lost an overtime game. The previous night against the University of Rochester, Mercyhurst tallied its highest goal total of the season winning 11-4. There were 5 different goal scorers within the game and 8 different players recorded points in the win. Matt Warren led the way with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Brian Stefanski added 5 assists in the contest. Player of the game Charlie Revett recorded a natural hat trick in the third period of play. Up next for the Lakers is an important ECHL League match-up against Syracuse University. The two teams last played each other on October 12th at the Tennity Ice Pavilion in Syracuse, NY. Mercyhurst was outplayed for most of the game, but was able to recover, finding a way to win by a margin of 4-3. This will mark the last pre-season meeting between the two teams. Game time is set to begin at 7pm on Friday night. |
