Several Mercyhurst Players Receive ECHL Season Ending Awards

Feb. 28, 2008

Erie, Pa - Several Mercyhurst players were honored with ECHL league awards at the conclusion of playoffs for the 2007-2008 season. Among them were sophomore's Kenny Hunt and Ben O'Dell, and freshman forward Steve Stepanian.

Kenny Hunt, a sophomore forward from Hackettstown, NJ was voted as an ECHL 2nd team All-Star. This is the second year in a row that Kenny has been recognized by the ECHL for his outstanding contributions in league play. In 2006-2007, Kenny received All-Rookie team recognition, tallying 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points in his freshman year. This season Kenny seen his point production more than double as he was able to accumulate 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points on the year, placing him 2nd on the team in points and third on the team in power play goals with five. Prior to Mercyhurst, Kenny played for the Shawnee Americans Junior A travel team.

Also receiving recognition from the league was sophomore defenseman Ben O'Dell from Elyria, OH. Ben had an exceptional sophomore campaign for the Lakers providing a steady presence on the defensive side of the puck while contributing offensively with 10 assists...a 10 point increase from last season. Ben was honored last season as the teams most improved player, a testament to his dedicated work ethic, his continual commitment to improvement, his strong defensive play and his exceptional overall attitude. These are the same qualities that helped him achieve ECHL 2nd team All-Star consideration.

Moreover, freshman forward Steven Stepanian from Butler, PA was recognized by the league and voted to the All-Rookie team for his exceptional 2-way game. Steve only put up 8 points on the year placing him 3rd in points among rookie players on the team, but his contribution all year long was invaluable. Steve is a strong 2-way forward and an exceptional PK player who possesses a great work ethic. Coach McKinnon and the Mercyhurst Club Hockey team would like to congratulate all of its players including those who were honored by the league.
