Club Hockey Defeats GMHL All-Stars

Jan. 9, 2008

Erie, Pa - The club hockey team had a triumphant victory over the Greater Metro (GMHL) Junior 'A' All-Stars just prior to Christmas break defeating the team by a margin of 2-1. This was the first of two meetings between the teams. The lakers will host the All-Stars again on Wednesday, January 30th, 2008.

The Greater Metro Junior 'A' All-Stars are some of the best players from the Greater Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League comprising some 16 teams, which are mostly based out of the Toronto region.

Senior captain Matt Warren scored first for the Lakers off a pass from Junior forward Walt Ozanick. "It is always nice to play all-star teams from other leagues because it is a good measuring stick for us as a team", commented Warren. "It reveals to us, as a team, what aspect of our game needs work and we can then practice to become better while putting it into action in league play".

The All-Stars countered with a goal of their own to begin the third period, but Mercyhurst was quick to answer with another go ahead goal of their own off a shot from Walter Ozanick. "The game was so intense and competitive that scoring the game winner felt pretty good...I guess I was in the right place at the right time", said Ozanick.

The victory over the GMHL Junior 'A' All-Stars ended the 2007 portion of the men's club hockey schedule. The team will look to carry some of that momentum into the New Year as they prepare for upcoming games against Rutgers and Duquesne University this coming weekend.

The Lakers now stand with an overall record of 8-6-4, and 4-3-1 within league play. The team now heads into the second half of their season where they will face a majority of their opponents on the road.
