Male Athlete of the Week Sophomore Jason Lashomb made 14 saves as Mercyhurst defeated Notre Dame de Namur 12-4 Saturday. Lashomb kept the Lakers in the game early as the Mercyhurst offense was slow to get started. Despite being outshot 15-3 in the first period, Mercyhurst only trailed 2-1 as Lashomb stopped six shots in the opening 15 minutes. Honor roll - Brian Chad, Baseball; David Hatten, Volleyball; James Ludwig, Baseball; Mateusz Przybysz, Tennis; Mike Thon, Lacrosse; Kyle Waddell, Golf; Jamie Walczak, Baseball Female Athlete of the Week Junior Christine Somera had 14 goals, five assists, 13 steals and 15 drawn ejections as Mercyhurst went 4-1 on the week. Somera had three goals, two assists, six steals and four drawn ejections in a win over St. Francis (N.Y.) and six goals, three steals and four drawn ejections against Iona. Honor roll - Kaitlin Brody, Golf; Jen Feret, Softball; Kim Griffin, Softball; Megan Houston, Softball; Gina Mieras, Water Polo; Kristen Toomey, Lacrosse, Carrie Willison, Water Polo Team of the Week The Mercyhurst women's water polo team went 4-1 on the week, advancing to the championship game of the Siena Invitational. The Lakers defeated Penn State Behrend 16-4 in a midweek CWPA game before competing in the Siena Invitational. Mercyhurst beat Slippery Rock 8-7 and St. Francis (NY) 10-2 to advance to the tournament semifinals. The Lakers avenged two earlier losses to Siena by defeating the Saints 8-4 before losing to Iona 13-11 in the championship game. |
