Male Athlete Of The Week
Junior guard T.J. Mathis scored a career high 24 points Saturday as Mercyhurst beat GLIAC foe Ashland 79-71. Mathis hit 10-of-16 field goals, including 3-of-5 from long distance, and also had three steals. Seventeen of Mathis' points came in the second half. Mathis posted ten points against Findlay on Thursday night, adding five rebounds and connecting on half of his four three-point attempts. For the week, Mathis shot 14-of-23 from the field (60.9 percent) and 5-of-8 beyond the arc (62.5 percent). He added eight total boards for the week. Female Athlete Of The Week
Senior forward Julie Anderson posted her career high 29 points against Ashland on Saturday. She shot 9-of-17 from the field, 2-of-6 beyond the arc, and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. In addition, Anderson pulled down 12 boards to notch her fourth double-double of the season. Against Findlay, Anderson led four Mercyhurst double-figure scorers with 24 points. Team Of The Week The Mercyhurst women's hockey team continued its domination with two wins over Cornell this weekend. The Lakers played both contests without goaltender Laura Hosier, forwards Meghan Agosta, Stephanie Jones and Valerie Chouinard, and defender Katariina Soikkanen, who were all overseas competing in the 2007 European Air Canada Cup. In the opener, Leslie McArthur and Natalie Payne scored goals to win 2-1. On Saturday, Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but freshman Angelica Lorsell scored early in the second to start a Laker rout. Jackie Jarrell tied the game in the second and Melissa Dianoski scored her first collegiate and go-ahead goal. Ashley Pendleton and Julia Colizza added a goal each, while Dianoski added the last goal of the game to finish with a 6-2 win.
